Accommodation in private homes is available in most cities and towns in Italy. It includes rooms with private or shared bathroom in a guest house. They are usually managed by the family, but not shared.
Contact the local tourist office of the city or town and request "un elenco di affittacamere" (list of persons letting rooms).
